The Nazis have ensnared a dark power from Canada's north, which could lead to the death of billions and doom for the Allied cause. Canada's wartime mystery man, The Black Ensign, comes to recruit Auric to the war effort, and he's not taking "No" for an answer! Andrew Healey and I were thrilled to once again be back in Ottawa this year for the TAC Pitch This competition and finished as semi-finalists pitching our action-adventure series, Dragon Knights. Check out some of the images below:

This concept has been a labour of love for us for the better part of the year, with much time spent revamping storylines, designs and polishing up the pilot script! While we can't say if or when you'll be watching this on the small screen, we can say that a series of comics/ graphic novels are in the works, so stay tuned for more details.

Also, I am pleased to announce (belatedly, due to all the prep work for Ottawa) the release of SCI: Jewish Comics Anthology Volume 2 by AH Comics. I once again had the honour of illustrating a story in this collection (and teased a panel back in June; hence the "Alien Zoos" part of the update) and count myself very lucky to be published alongside amazing creators Ty Templeton, Richard Pace. Katie Sawatsky, and Bill Sienkiewicz!

Thanks again for checking back, and to those who have inquired about a detailed list of services I provide, it has been added to my About page. Looking forward to sharing more soon but in the meantime, you can follow my more frequent posting on Instagram, where you'll find me under @shanekirshy.
A couple years ago, I did a series of daily sketches depicting animals in different themes (Old West, Science Fiction, etc) and it proved to be quite popular. Life events took me away from the exercise, but in July of 2018, I had an idea to combine my love of drawing these animals in unique costumes and genres with a way of supporting a worthy cause, the World Wildlife Fund.
The idea behind the project is simple; draw animals by request and sell the original artwork, with half of the proceeds going to the WWF. The art will then (after a decent amount is created) be collected into a book, which like the art itself, will have part of the proceeds donated to the WWF, as well.
Here are just a few that I have completed thus far (for more info, visit the Facebook Page or email me at shanekirshenblatt@rogers.com ) :

Not only is this update coming just over a week since my last one, but I've just overhauled the Portfolio section and divided it into different sections (separate comic art story and cover sections, as well as areas focusing on posters, concept, figure drawing, and character design) A storyboarding section will follow in the coming weeks but now that the division has been made, I can post more art overall, instead of one overcrowded page.

Additionally, plans are in place to launch a YouTube channel, where I can share free tips and tricks to those looking to learn and get motivated to create their own comics and/or animation projects. This has been a bit of a passion project for some time, and I want to make sure I'm providing a unique experience, and not just me regurgitating information that is already available on hundreds of channels or sites. Realistically, hoping to launch this in the fall.

Thanks for stopping by and (hopefully) more updates coming soon!
Speaking of AH Comics, Mark Twain's Niagara launched this past weekend at Niagara Falls Comic Con, and I was very excited to get physical copies in hand (see below). It was great to see the cover/ story pages I did in their final printed glory, as well as the amazing contributions by legendary artists like Ty Templeton, Richard Pace and many, many more.

Lastly, and certainly not least, congrats to the editorial team from Hogtown Horror, for their Gene Day Award nomination from the Joe Shuster Awards. It's an honor to have contributed (cover, logo design, and a story) to this amazing project and to be in such great company with the other nominees on that list!

I anticipate a very busy next few months, as I continue to plug away at comics and animation projects and although the updates may be few and far between, you can be sure that any announcements will be significant ones!

Apparently, my last update was sometime in November (that can't be right, I remember it being much more recent... don't I?) but I have been rather busy since then!

The holiday season was kind to me in terms of volume of commissions, and on top of that, Andrew Healey and I were hard at work developing and pitching our two animation projects to studios all over Toronto. Additionally, I made the decision to accompany Andrew to Kidscreen in Miami this past February, in order to expand awareness of our works in progress to the US and international markets. Not surprisingly, we had a lot more success with our comedy project than our action-adventure property. The market wants what it wants, but the persistent storytellers that we are, we are dedicated to bringing the action series to fruition in some form, most likely a kids comic/ graphic novel series. Perhaps this will serve as a proof of concept, but we are both eager and excited to get it out there. Sample scripts are nearly complete for both show ideas, as well as other ideas.

After Kidscreen, I completed my pages for AH Comics' Mark Twain Book, which will see a release sometime over the next couple of months (as soon as I know the date, I will let you know). As you'll see in the page sample below, this took considerable time and effort but I (along with the publisher) are extremely pleased with the results. I can't wait to hold the book in my hand and also get started on my story for the SCI: The Jewish Comix Anthology Vol. 2 (also slated for a Spring release by AH Comics). Contracts have been signed and work started on other comic projects as well, but they are too early stage to share anything just yet (but definitely before the end of the month).

My main focus right now is completing my pages for AH Comics' Mark Twain's Niagara Book One, slated for release sometime next Spring. This book features work from many notable artists (too many to list, but if you look at the cover image below, you can see for yourself), with whom I feel honoured to be featured alongside. I'm still thrilled that I had the opportunity to illustrate that cover, especially since it gave me the chance to read the entire script, which I loved and can't wait to read in it's final form!

I also recently completed a pinup in support of AH's Kickstarter for SCI: The Jewish Comics Anthology Volume 2. As mentioned previously, this is a bit of a departure from the first installment, in terms of focusing more on original tales with a Sci-Fi twist, than a mix of traditional folk tales and other stories seen in the first volume. It's definitely a change for me since my contribution to that book was an adaptation of a somewhat scary 12th-century tale "The Bleeding Tree", whereas this time around, I'll be taking on more of a comedic yard, "It Could Be Worse". Below is the pinup, which can be yours as a signed print (with a copy of the book) as a reward for supporting the Kickstarter.
For those of you wondering about progress on the animation projects mentioned in the previous post, things are in the works but it's a slow process. Nothing to report on that just now but I will certainly share any developments as they come up.
Thanks for checking in!Shane Kirshenblatthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10416204071283516594noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4962118540567681631.post-925202501691206632017-10-30T07:51:00.003-07:002017-10-30T07:51:54.464-07:00Long Time, No See!As the title of the post implies, it's been a while since I've posted an update (several months, I'm embarrassed to say), but there has been much activity in the interim!

First and foremost, I've had the honour and pleasure of teaming up with writer Andrew Healey to develop a couple of properties for animation- an industry I've been interested in breaking into for quite some time- and that has kept me pretty busy for the past few months. Reception to our projects has been overwhelmingly positive in the relatively short time we've been working together, and our pitch for our kids animated comedy series Zap Kazaam (with incredible design work by animation artist Joseph Troy) was runner-up in the Pitch This! competition at this year's Ottawa International Animation Festival. I can't really post much from it yet because it is still under consideration from several potential investors/ studios, but here is a teaser image, so if/ when it does make it's way to the screen, you'll know where you saw it first:

Since then, we have been hard at work, completing a pitch bible for an action-adventure series-which we successfully did, just last week! Sadly, I can't share anything from that just yet, since it is just going out now to prospective buyers, but we're pleased that there has been a lot of positive feedback/interest based solely on the verbal pitch we presented in Ottawa. I really look forward to sharing this soon!

On the publishing front, I was delighted to hear from AH Comics that Mark Twain's Niagara-a project announced a couple years back, for which I had the distinct pleasure of illustrating the cover will be released in the spring of 2018, so I'll be pretty busy putting together my interior pages for that over the next little while. Additionally, they have announced a follow-up to the Jewish Comics Anthology, this one with a sci-fi twist and appropriately named SCI: The Jewish Comics Anthology Vol.2. Very excited to be contributing to this as well, alongside industry greats like Ty Templeton, David Mack and Bill Seinkiewicz and many, many more. This one is also slated for a 2018 release, and the Kickstarter is running right now!

That's all for now, folks! I'll try to be a bit better about updates, but right now, my priority is actually getting the work done. I haven't forgotten about plans for the YouTube channel, which is still going to happen, but it's going to have to wait until things calm down a bit, so I have the time to do it right!

There has been much behind-the-scenes planning and work for a number of different endeavors and projects. Over the next several months, I will be launching a webcomic series that will eventually be collected and printed (currently being laid out). Additionally, I'm slowly accumulating equipment (and knowledge) to launch an art tip focused YouTube channel, to share (at no cost) advice about creating comics, sculpting, painting, and pretty much anything else that helps others see their creative inclinations come to life, with confidence.

As a bit of a prelude to this, I have started posting process images for various projects that I have completed over the past few years to demonstrate that there are always multiple solutions to a single problem or challenge.

Please enjoy and stay tuned for more details!

-Kirshy

First is the upcoming release of the Hogtown Horror Vol. 1, for which I contributed the cover art, and a story (Illustrated by Andrew Kwan and coloured by Tim Lai). Hogtown Horror, is a collection of horror stories intended for mature audiences-- a love-letter to the genre, and a celebration of horror's past, present and future. This project was successfully funded in Kickstarter and will be released in the next couple of weeks. I had the honour and privilege of illustrating the official theatrical release poster for Heroes Manufactured, a documentary about independent comics creators, and the convention scene by Yaron Betan. I was among several artists to be featured in this film (alongside Ty Templeton, Alfonso Espinos, Meaghan Carter, Andy Stanleigh and many more). The film will be released later this year (or early next). Please visit the official site for more details!

Honoured to be a part of this, which features all new stories by many top-notch Toronto creators, and an amazing cover by Adam Gorham! This book also features the first ever collaboration by my wife, Sari Kirshenblatt and myself (an autobiographical fun short called, Taste of the Neighbourhood; she wrote it, I drew it). The book is slated to launch at TCAF (Toronto Comic Arts Festival, Sat May 14, 2016) and though I won't be there in person, many of the creators will be on-hand to sign copies purchased there. Excited to see this come to fruition!

It was truly a thrill when I received the confirmation (from Hogtown Horror Editor Nelson Da Rocha) earlier this year that my story submission for the first volume had been accepted. Horror has always been one of my favourite genres to work in and as a longtime fan of the old EC Comics (Tales From The Crypt, Haunt Of Fear, etc) series, I've jumped at any chance to participate in such projects. I was therefore humbled to not only have my story accepted into this first collection of Canada-centric tales, but also honoured to be offered the opportunity opportunity to do the title designs and book cover! Stay tuned for more details about Hogtown Horror, which will be launching in the fall.
